We would love to get care packages and/or letters from you along the way, and this page is set up to help you get them to us. Picking up mail on the trail is more complicated than at home, so all you need to know is listed below.
How/Where? Anything you send needs to go Priority Mail through US Postal Service. Addresses for places we will be stopping are listed below. There are several important parts to this:
- Address the box/letter exactly as we have it written here (very important), otherwise it might evaporate.
- On each box, write "Please hold for PCT hiker. ETA: (date from list below)" This lets the post office know to hold the box for us.
- For letters, Priority Mail is just the regular mail (nothing fancy).
- For any packages, request that they go Priority Mail, which will get the box to us in about three days. Don't send anything by parcel post, since it often ends up lost along the way.
- Once you are sending something, let us know so we can pick it up. The best way to do this is to call Erin's cell phone and leave a voicemail. If you don't know the number, email any of us (Kitt, Erin or Carol) and we will let you know. We will only have intermittent internet access, so calling is by far the best way to alert us that we have goodies in the mail.
What to send? Letters! These are light, fun, and encouraging; we'd love to get some. Food! If you want to send a care package, we would love to get some delicious treats. Erin can't eat wheat or dairy (including butter, cream, milk etc), so some good choices that meet both requirements are...
- potato chips (especially Tim's Cascade BBQ or Sea Salt and Vinegar)
- gluten/dairy free brownies (Bob's Red Mill brand makes a delicious mix)
- Clif Shot Bloks (http://www.clifbar.com/food/products_shot_bloks/)
- Beef jerky
- Trader Joe's Gluten Free gingersnaps
- Starbucks Via packets
- Nut butter packets (Justin's brand are especially tasty)
- those hippie cookies from health food stores that are tasty and don't have wheat or dairy (brand doesn't matter, they are all good! especially Newman-O's.)
Kitt doesn't have any dietary restrictions, so he appreciates any and all baked goods, in addition to the foods listed above.
Other things to consider: whatever you send might sit for a while, so if you're sending baked goods (mmmm), seal them in a ziploc and send them about a week before we get to town so they will be moderately fresh. It would also be great if you could label what you send, so Erin can know if there is wheat or dairy in it.
Things not to send include the following: Fig Newtons, hard candy, heavy things (books...), plain almonds, anything super perishable.
Most of all, we'd just love to hear from you. Comment on our blog, call us, or send us a letter! Your support means a lot.

Here is our updated itinerary! We are slightly faster than we predicted, and we have taken fewer days off, which has put us farther up the trail.

It sounds like so far, so good! No foot or shin splint problems. I posted a combined version of your two entries prior to departure on www.pcttrailsidereader.com. Very well written! I hope to post more as you move north.
